Glasgow University Boat Club

Saturday 24th saw us host our annual eights head of the Clyde, the Western Head. This year we were kindly sponsored by the aptly named West brewery, who provided this years prizes. After the dissapointment of last year's cancellation due to bad weather we were blessed with perfect conditions for racing. Good performances were had by GUBC but the Men's 1st VIII narrowly lost out to Edinburgh in the 2nd Division by 1 second. Congratulations to the Women's Novice VIII who continued their impressive season by being the 1st female novice university crew. A massive to thank you to James Hayhurst for organising the day.

All visiting competitors are advised to read the Rules of the Clyde which can be found on our website. http://glasgowubc.com/NewPages/safety.html

NB
Please remember we are guests in Glasgow Green. Please do not drive/park on the grass and be respectful of the public. Also pay attention to the speed limits while on the Green. Thank-you.

COMPETITOR INFORMATION

RACE REGISTRATION
A representative of each club should report to Race Control on the first floor of Glasgow University Boat Club between 9:30am and 10:15am to;

  1. Collect Race packs (and pay any outstanding deposits for bow numbers)
  2. Pay any outstanding race fees
  3. Confirm crew name and status
  4. Advise of any scratchings

START LINE
The start line will be at the halfway wall on the Belvidere straight of the Clyde.

FINISH LINE
The finish line is at ‘the platform’ in Glasgow Green. Approximately 200m downstream of the Blue suspension bridge and next to the Glasgow Humane Society. This will be marked with a banner.

PROCEEDING UPSTREAM TO THE START

Crews must stay to the north bank and only use north bank arches (coxswain’s left).  When overtaking, crews may use the centre of the river and the centre arches, provided no crews are paddling downstream.

TIME GATE
Crews proceeding to the start must have reached Dalmarnock Bridge by 11:20am (Division 1) and 1:50pm (Division 2) or they will be turned back and will be unable to race. We strongly recommend that you have reached this point at least 15 minutes before the start, in order to be on time.

ARRIVAL AT THE START
Crews must be upstream of the start 5 minutes before the division start time.

  • Division 1 – 11:25am
  • Division 2 – 1:55pm

Late crews will incur a 5 second penalty added to their finish time for every minute they are late, or face possible disqualification.

MARSHALLING AT THE START
ODD NUMBERS – NORTH BANK
EVEN NUMBERS – SOUTH BANK
Crews should stay pointing upsteam until asked to turn. Please listen carefully to the marshals.
Crews should not row around the corner upstream of the start, they must remain in sight of the start marshals at all times.

STARTING PROCEEDURE
The Start is a ‘rolling start’. Crews will be asked to turn individually and proceed to the start. Look for the start sign on the bank, this is when timing will begin, the timer will also shout the crew number and “Go!”

RULES OF THE COURSE
  • Marshalling from umpires on the bank must be strictly adhered to.  Failure to do so may result in time penalties or disqualification.
  • Overtaking crews have right of way.  The overtaken crew must give water and allow the overtaking crew to follow its own 'racing course'.
  • We strongly recommend crews use the centre arches for the first three downstream bridges and Kings bridge. Coxes should only use the other arches to avoid collision with another crew.
FINISH
Finishing will be signalled by a whistle. After finishing, crews must continue downstream beyond the safety launch before turning. They should then proceed slowly and under the marshals’ instructions to where they boated. Crews returning to GRC should cross the river just downstream of Kings Bridge, only when it is safe to do so. SAFETY
  • The race is under SARA rules
  • A safety launch will follow the last crew down
  • A safety launch will also be present at the railway bridge and at the finish for any athletes that get into difficulty
  • Competitors, particularly coxes should take note of the course hazards on the Race map
  • KEEP WELL CLEAR OF THE WEIR AT THE FINISH

GATES
Please keep all gates closed at all times. This is for both security and safety reasons.

COURSE
To be raced downstream on the Clyde, over a course of approximately 5000 metres. Starting half way along the Belvidere straight, and finishing at The Platform on Glasgow Green, approximately 200 metres downstream of the blue suspension bridge.

PRIZES
All winning junior crews will receive individual prizes, irrespective of the number entered in their category. Individual prizes will be awarded to all winning Senior crews with more than one entrant in their category.  We have over 200 bottles of beer to give away for the best men’s Open and Novice, and Women’s Open and Novice University crews!

Entries paid on the day will be subject to a surcharge of 50p per sliding seat (£4)! No crew will be allowed to race before their entries have been paid.

Clubs will also need to pay a £5 deposit for each bow number. This will be returned when Race Control receives the numbers after the race. If clubs wish, they may send a separate cheque for this in advance.

On the day we will only require one representative from each club to report to Race Control to collect a ‘race pack’ containing numbers etc. for their whole club, for both divisions.

Please post or deliver cheques payable to Glasgow University Boat Club;
