Taster Session 2010

We Want You!

GUBC is on the lookout for the next generation of rowers at Glasgow University. Whether you have rowed before or have never been in a boat, we want you!

The Boat Club is one of the oldest and most successful sporting clubs at the University. We take pride in turning complete novices into a Scottish and British International standard. In recent years, GUBC has represented Great Britain across the continent at the European Universities Regatta. Athletes have travelled to Zagreb, Brive in France, Poznan - Poland and this year Amsterdam in Holland and Commonwealth Regatta in Canada.

Closer to home, we have multiple medals from the British University Championships. In 2008 we were Scottish University Champions and also outright Scottish Champions in all but two Open categories. Last year the Men’s 1st VIII received the award for ‘Team of the Year’ at the GUSA ball. The club also picked up more ‘sporting blues’ than any other club at the University.

GUBC is very well catered for with its own large boathouse on the banks of the Clyde at Glasgow Green. We have a modern, well maintained fleet of boats with our own fully equipped gym. The club also enjoys various training camps throughout the year. Recently, this has seen squads travelling to our twinned club in northern Italy, where good weather and stunning scenery have allowed for excellent rowing.

If you’re an experienced oarsperson, or if you think you would just like to give it a go then come along and speak to us at the freshers fayre. We will also be running a taster session on Saturday 18th September at 12:00.

Also sign up to one of our mailing lists.

Glasgow v Edinburgh Boat Race

For the 11th year in sucession Glasgow won the annual boat race against Edinburgh University.

British Universities (BUCS) Regatta - GOLD, GOLD, GOLD for Glasgow!

GUBC showed excellent form at the BUCS Regatta, bringing home 3 golds and a bronze. Steph McDowell dominated the ladies scull to take the victory on Sunday. On Monday she teamed up in the double with Jenny Alex and the scullers again showed their quality with another win. Anine Hallander continues to show excellent progress which was rewarded with a win in the womens lightweight scull. The mens intermediate 4 of Elliott Clarke, Mike McNaul, Peri Jake-Stynes, Jan Huckmann and James Hayhurst finished 3rd. The championship 4 also had an excellent row being narrowly pushed into fourth place. The mens champ pair and womens lightweight double also had good rows to make finals. Novice girls four also survived large waves.

March -

The Head of the River

The Men’s 1st VIII (pictured below) had an impressive row over the championship course in London to finish in 59th place overall after starting 187th. The race, which is run from Putney to Mortlake, also featured many of GB’s current and prospective Olympians.

The result gave GUBC the honour of being the fastest placed Scottish crew. The Novice VIII again produced another exceptional result, managing to defeat the 2nd VIII.

Overall the trip was very successful, despite a double puncture to the trailer, a parking ticket and a snapped light cable, which was expertly rewired by Elliott. An interesting night in Putney was had, with entertainment provided in the shape of Mark Mikkelsen.

Clydesdale Eights & Fours

Good performances again only a week after Tyne+Trent. Novice showing their potential once more as the winning novice men's crew. Senior women also solidified their good performance last weekend. Results here

After the long weekend down south it was time to let off some steam. Social Sec Aimee Hooper steped up to the mark with a Cowboys & Indians night to remember. Ending up in the art school the novice male indians were making every effort to expand their tribe.

An unnamed new addition has this remark: "***** would like to give thanks for the politeness and general good manners of Glasgow's schoolchildren. Not one of the many that I passed this morning made any witty remark or quip, or had a dig at the fact I was staggering back through town, at 8am, wearing nothing but pyjama bottoms, an apparently blood stained vest, an ungodly amount of fake tan, and war paint."

February -Tyne & Trent

Captain's message: I would like to congratulate everybody who came on the Tyne and Trent trip. On the whole it went extremely well (until about 11pm on Sunday anyway). I was glad to see that the cancelling of races in Nottingham didn’t seem to impact on the good spirit, and the support of the senior men was much appreciated. Can I again apologise to those who didn’t get to race at Trent. Unfortunately sometimes these things happen, but the decisions made are always in everyone’s best interest.

The highlight of the weekends racing was an excellent win for the Senior Girls four of Laura, Nim, Steph, Anna and Alanna. They took the honours in Newcastle picking up some glass tankards and additionally were only 8 seconds behind the fastest Elite Four of the day, well done girls!

The Novice Girls also performed extremely well at Tyne in both the eight and four, posting similar times to other crews in the category. Particularly impressive as many of the other ‘Novice’ crews seemed to have more than 1 years experience behind them.

The Senior Guys were the only squad to race at both events and showed promising results. The 1st VIII came 3rd overall at Tyne and were only 5 seconds off winning the category at Trent. The Ulsterman 1st IV of Danny, Mike M, Ricey and Elliott (above) had an excellent row and were the fastest four in Division 3, however a time penalty prevented them winning.

The Mens Novice 8 defeated Newcastle, a club well known for producing excellent Novice crews. The Novice 4 also had a good row finishing 4th.

Again well done. No crews were late and everybody helped to make sure unpacking and packing was done quickly which makes a big difference.

These results are excellent, there isn’t much time left until the Scottish and British University Championships so keep training as there’s medals to be won!

Tyne Results. Trent Results

Training section updated. Next race Tyne & Trent double header: 27th & 28th Feb. Good luck to all competing crews.

Race Report to follow.... Also video from our Nemesis on the Clyde

December

A rescheduled event meant a good opportunity to test how well training had been going before the Christmas break. The men’s quad had a poor row but still did well to finish 3rd overall. Division 2 saw a thrilling race with Clydesdale in which the lads were narrowly beaten by 4 seconds. The Novice men had excellent rows despite equipment failure and meeting the bank. The Novice Girls crews also looked in good form to overcome SUBC. The Girls were understandably frustrated when a good row in R1 was ruined by equipment failure. Recently, the club has been helped by the advice of Bob Reid on boat maintenance so hopefully there will be no repeats. Our thanks go to Bob!

November

GUBC welcomed Argonauts old and new to the annual Club Dinner which this year celebrated 10 consecutive Boat Race wins. The GUU Dining room was at full capacity as around 140 guests enjoyed an excellent atmosphere. The speeches were led by Russell Jones, giving a unique and entertaining insight into his views of Rowing. Last years Captain, Gordon Du Cane, thanked the Argonauts for their support and encouraged the alumni to continue with their generousity, both in funds and coaching time. GUBC legend, Dave Russell, also recalled fond memories from his past experience as he made his 'toast to the ten in a row'. Dave then introduced Nigel Atkins, arguably the clubs most successful coach, to present the top secret 'Project X' to the club.

The Dinner was also the launch of the much anticipated '10 in a Row tie', created by Uli and Ari. The traditional punch ceremony and ceidih followed by Deep 6 for the survivors seemed to ensure that all those invited had an excellent night.
